Motivating Ordinary Okinawans To Fight For Independence

Perhaps to the enemy this is called 'treason' if you are Japanese. If you are outsider you are called 'meddling' in other country's internal affairs. But why Free Tibet is not in the same category as Free Okinawa? Does NGO's ring a bell to you? So no different here. What is done here is to promote Justice for Okinawans.

What is written here is nothing new. I am just putting them into one post.

Okinawans suffers from subtle discriminations from Tokyo for decades. Yet not enough attention have being paid to them because nobody self immolate like Tibetans, nobody was sent to a Gulag or Gitmo because Japan is a 'democracy'. However this alone does not mean Okinawans are happy with their occupation by Tokyo and US.

Why are Okinawans living under the cloud from Tokyo and Washington? They could be killed tomorrow if war breaks out between China and Japan.This time, the weapons are much more lethal compared with WWII when about 150,000 Okinawans were killed through no fault of their own!

Thus it is perfectly legitimate to help Okinawans achieve independence given the current dangerous situation in their environment. An independent Okinawa will remove the harm to them due to presence of Japanese and US bases. Both bases need to be removed under terms dictated by Okinawans, not the other way round.

Because Okinawans  had being subtly suppressed for so long, many find any call for independence a lost cause. You don't find a huge rally for independence so far, only some protests against US bases. Why is this so? The reason I suspect is because the poor Okinawans are afraid of losing their jobs, disruptions to their already poor lives, thus not many want to disturb the status quo. The other reason is the younger generations under 30 who have lost touch with their own culture. This is sad, but people takes time to mature, so I am certain these young adults will wake up and understand the gravity of the situation. They need to preserve their own culture while assimilating into mainstream Japanese culture as well. They need to be awakened to the discrimination towards them and feel anger inside. Why are there so few, if any, millionaires, big company bosses who are Okinawans? This anger against injustice will motivate them to fight for independence. However one missing piece of zig zaw puzzle proposed below to put anger into action.

But what if a way can be found to stir up their inherent wish to become independent? Yes, there are many who want their own country back, much more than the current small 5% visible ones. There are many multitudes more once they see the independence movement gather steam, once they see there is support for their cause from the international community and especially once they see their livelihood will not be disrupted severely. In other words they want to see that they can get an alternative source of income to help them out if their participation in independence movement cause financial harm to them.

So this is a chicken and egg situation. Should we have the egg (money) first so the chicken (independence) can be hatched? Or should the independence activists Okinawans sacrifice their jobs and livelihoods and wait for the funding to come? I suspect many are risk adverse and prefer not to stir things up. This lack of bravery is precisely why they are under the thumb of Tokyo and Washington for so long. They have a sense of despair, resigned that this is their fate. But not so fast! What if a few million dollars of funding is available to help them feel brave enough to turn out in bigger numbers to really really tell Tokyo their aspiration to become independent?

I think thus the best way to help independence movement to go forward is by helping Okinawans raise a substantial amount of 'fighting money' perhaps at least $10 million dollars initially to help them get all fired up and put their true feelings into action!

There are many ways to raise funds, but to start I think they can do some small time fund raising activities like selling Okinawan Independence, just call it Free Okinawa for example in touristy places, putting this label on cups, hats, patches, souvenirs etc featuring dugongs, Okinawa maps, Okinawa Assembly building.

They can also look for some songs like Give Ireland Back To The Irish, a very stirring song to help generate awareness for their cause, available for download from iTunes for example for a small donation perhaps. Of course they should change the lyrics, even get Japanese and Western artists to help them make many versions.This song is not original so they should be able to use it. It is familiar to Westerners in US and UK, so this should be a very appealing song. In particular if a few Western famous singers sing this song in English lyrics, changed wordings, this will generate immense free publicity for the independence cause. Okinawans should solicit their help!

$10 million dollars is not that much for the Okinawan Independence cause, so perhaps a few rich anonymous donors may donate even more. This is merely Seed Money to help the independence movement go to the next step with more participation, just like a Presidential Campaign, needing more financial fire power. The most important thing is Okinawans themselves should feel motivated, should try and get the ball rolling and have a good website, have Facebook presence so it is easy for donors to donate. There are many professional fund raising organizations in the US and if Okinawans make the right connections, they will be able to reach many deep pocket people there and elsewhere, even from Japan and China etc willing to help their cause. I'll put this list in another post later.

Caveat: do not take funds from China to avoid being tainted as being used by China against Japan. Also funds should be properly managed, not for personal use to avoid alienating future potential donors or repeat donors.

So what are you waiting for Okinawans? Independence is yours for the asking!

How Okinawa Independence Can Help Make Ryukus People Very Rich Like Kuwaitis 沖縄独立性Ryukusピープル非常に豊富同様クウェートを作るどのように役立つか

Okinawa independence must be run like a business, a professional campaign that is sustained, with foreign help especially from American NGO's, citizens, famous Americans, well funded to improve the chance for success.

Okinawa is one of the poorest prefecture in Japan. This can only be explained by one thing: Subtle discrimination by Tokyo, making them second class citizens. Mainland Japanese companies set up shop in Okinawa, make money and send back to Japan. Okinawans are only involved mostly in small business, mom and pop businesses. There is hardly any millionaires in Okinawa, so something is wrong! A free Okinawa should be able to generate many millionaires in their own country. Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, all small democratic countries are good examples with hundreds of millionaires.

A very important reason why Okinawans are not rich is because they are starved of investments! Okinawans themselves should have enough seed money to invest in their own communities, plow back the profits and reinvest in more businesses to start a chain reaction benefiting their own people. This is different from Tokyo's subtle discrimination where the mainland Japanese companies set up shop in Okinawa and repatriate the Yen back to Tokyo, leaving Okinawans with nothing but just as a salaryman all their life or just run a small mom and pop business. By being independent Okinawans have a chance to break out of this vicious cycle where they have no opportunities to move upward to more wealth.

There is no reason why Okinawans cannot become the richest people in the area if Okinawans are allowed to have a referendum and become independent. Okinawans should demand More, More More! Why stay poor when they can be rich and not have to depend on others? Okinawans can still be rich and enjoy their leisurely life and not be polluted by Western culture if they choose to. It is possible to be rich and still keep one's culture and lifestyle intact.

An independent Okinawa and surrounding Ryukus Islands give Okinawans the right to determine their own fate. They will have complete control over all matters, no exceptions to defer to Tokyo wishes.

Okinawa and surrounding Ryukus Islands have great potential to have oil/gas too. With the vast sea space surrounding the Ryukus Islands there is a very good possibility for oil/gas finds that will make Okinawans very rich. Why depend on Tokyo for handouts and still live poor?

There are many oil/gas exploration companies who are more than willing to drill drill drill and share profits with Okinawa.

Of course Okinawans have to be careful not to allow reckless drilling to avoid any potential disaster, but if well managed, the payoff will be immense. It must be remembered that oil/gas exploration is a risky business, so it does not mean there are oil/gas around Okinawa or other Ryukus Islands. Newer  deep offshore drilling improve the chance for success and reduce environmental risk. In any case, it is the oil exploration companies who are taking the risk and Okinawans do not have to pay a dime upfront.

At the present time there appears to be no oil/gas explorations off the Ryukus Islands, including Okinawa. Not even

Why is this so? I suspect this is due to military considerations by US & Japan, not to have any drilling platforms too near to secret military bases. The only place so far known is near Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands which of course is in dispute between China and Japan. This means Okinawans have a vast unexplored areas around all the Ryukus Islands which could very well have plenty of oil and gas. This is excellent chance for Okinawans to strike it rich through joint venture with foreign oil/gas drilling companies. Not just oil, Okinawans have strategic location and good climate to boost tourism, perhaps as popular as Bali or Phuket in South East Asia! Imagine people coming to Okinawa to enjoy para sailing, snorkeling, enjoy  nice beaches, no need to go all the way to South East Asia for vacation. Given the rich history and nearness to Tokyo, Taipei and Seoul, Okinawa could be part of this island hopping package that rival South East Asia. Right now Okinawa does not register as a 'must visit' tourist destination for people from far away in Europe/America. An independent Okinawa will generate more headlines and people will want to experience this exotic new country!

Upon independence Okinawa can be promoted as Hawaii in the East. This will boost Okinawa's image as a 'must visit' touristy site.

The Free Trade Zone can be expanded with reclaimed land from Futenma and elsewhere when US bases are reclaimed later should US withdraw. Okinawa thus can be a hub for many major international business and people will be attracted here due to nice friendly people, excellent culture, good climate and exotic vacation spots.

So Okinawa's riches may lie more on the surrounding seas in the Ryukus Islands and less on the islands themselves. The islands provide strategic location for warehouse, FTZ, tourism etc. Just look at Singapore, a smaller land space than Okinawa. If Singapore can prosper, so can Okinawa!

As I proposed many times, the most important reason is Combat Radius of Japanese jet fighters. Forcing Japanese fighters back to Kyushu makes it harder to patrol over Diaoyu/Senkaku. Even the newer F35 stealth fighter jet Japan plan to get in March have worst performance without refueling. The combat range is only about 600 miles, too small to patrol Diaoyu/Senkaku if placed in Kyushu.

As for US bases in Okinawa, it is necessary to coexist with US for a few more years, perhaps a dozen years while Henoko is being built to replace Futenma.

The reason why Okinawans should wait, be patient with US bases presence is the gradual reduction of US presence through changes in US/China military equation as follows:

First China will be having a couple of Carrier Groups by around 2020 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_aircraft_carrier_programme This may not be as impressive as the US Carrier Groups but it is very important as a Counter Intimidation tool. Intimidation is a nice word to replace 'terrorising others', more civil but same motive.
So imagine an angry China send two Carrier Groups to US, one off Los Angeles, the other off Washington DC or New York. Just cruise up and down US coasts. While US submarines and Carrier Groups monitor them and even give photo ops to show Chinese ships smaller than US Carrier ships, it does not matter. The American public will become very frightened and angry at her government for putting their lives at risk. Remember all Carrier Group can carry fighter jets with tactical nuclear weapons and there is no reason why China won't hide one in her ship. Now they see on TV, on the internet, maybe even visual, they can see Chinese ships over the horizon. Newspapers like CNN, Foxnews, Reuters, NYTimes, Bloomberg etc will be reporting 24/7. The whole idea is to get US citizens to write to their Congress and demand US to pull back from Okinawa and elsewhere in Asia. They do not want war with China over the silly little islands in Diaoyu/Senkaku, or the Spratlys in the South China Seas. To them these are nothing worth defending since they are not economically worthwhile and most importantly they understand these are disputed areas and thus don't necessarily fall into the mutual defense treaties US have with her allies.

So this is one factor US may pull back from the Pacific and Okinawa may be a very good start. There will be less US bases there as a result of Chinese ships showing up around US. Of course this will be negotiated quietly to give US face, so over the next few months Okinawa may see less US bases. The current Liaoning Carrier Group may even sail around US in the next couple of years as a prelude to more Chinese Carrier Groups sailing in US waters.

The other reason is the advance in technology. Remember US make a very big deal even if one US soldier die in war. It is like other countries death is not that important. US will find every which way she can to reduce her marines, airmen, sailors in Okinawa to reduce risk of death from war with China. For this reason US may work on substituting US base personnel in Okinawa with more drones, more dependency on long range strategic bombers, perhaps even hypersonic missiles if developed. There will also be F35C stealth fighter jets and drones as well from US Carrier Groups, so no need to be on Okinawa itself. For these reasons, there will be a very good chance US will reduce her footprint in Okinawa over the next dozen years and return perhaps half of the land currently occupied and even more when she find it is unnecessary when China become more democratized. Even N Korea may not be a good excuse for US to be there anymore, thus US may be completely gone from Okinawa in about a dozen years time!

So I hope Okinawans anti base people can see, the future looks good! Just be patient. The immediate danger is Tokyo's LDP Abe militaristic posture towards China and the Japanese air and naval bases in Naha and elsewhere in Ryukus Islands. Demand Tokyo to move all her military assets back to mainland Japan. The best and only way Tokyo can understand is to fight for Okinawa Independence!

By becoming independent, Okinawans can shape the destiny of nations surrounding them and also themselves. They won't become a victim of US or Japanese military planning. Also there is a very good possibility for war to break out over the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands in Jan 2017, right before Obama leave office, before US Jan 20 inauguration of a new president. This could be an unstable period and either China or Japan may disturb the peace at that time.

So the window for Okinawa Independence before war break out is quite narrow, perhaps only three years! Okinawans therefore must hurry, go into overdrive to build up critical mass to achieve independence fast.

Last year in Oct,  China conducted the massive Maneuver 5 naval exercise and sent a clear unmistakable signal to Tokyo and Washington that China can come and go to the Western Pacific via the Mikayo Strait unhindered. No longer is China fearful of being intimidated by Japan or US.

So now that China have broken free of the First Island Chains what use then is possession of Okinawa and other Ryukus Islands to Japan? I don't see much value in the military sense any more. Besides modern missiles can be launched from Chinese ships, jets, submarines, land far away to hit all those Ryukus Islands, including Okinawa, so defending these islands are going to be very expensive.

What are the benefits to Japan for holding on to the Ryukus Islands? There isn't much benefits with regard to the land resources. Fishing, oil/gas exploration maybe, but Japan itself have plenty of such resources, so there is no need to take what naturally belongs to Okinawans/Ryukus people before Japan forcefully annex their Kingdom in 1879.

Thus returning those islands to the Okinawans/Ryukus people is the correct thing to do, and most importantly it will save mainland Japanese people from spending avoidable billions of Yen!

What the Japanese save from leaving the Ryukus Islands are as follows:
Cut off the navy division currently placed all over Okinawa and other places.
Cut off the air bases in Naha, Okinawa
Cut off the ground forces in Okinawa
Cut off the coast guard in Okinawa and surrounding islands.

Cut off the yearly 300 plus billion yen sent to Okinawans

The Japanese public debt exceeded one quadrillion yen (US$10.46 trillion) in 2013, more than twice the annual gross domestic product of Japan

Even if Japan cashed in all T Bills bough from US, that amount $1.1 trillion dollars is only about 10% of debt. That is way short of fixing Japan's financial health unless all the Japanese bondholders cancel the government debt owed to them but then, all the pension funds holding J bonds will be broke! In short LDP have completely mismanaged Japan and Japanese should start anew, taking a brave new road as outlined here to avoid further disaster.

So the question is why not just give up the whole Ryukus Islands and save Japan a whole lot of current military expenditure plus avoiding future expenditure?

The first obstacle to overcome is national pride. It is important not to be nationalists as can be seen the cost of nationalism is harmful to the overall nation's financial health and also damage Japan's image abroad.

A most important consequence of Okinawan Independence is the control of Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands by the Okinawans themselves. Immediately after independence, Okinawans should plant their flag in those islands, develop tourism there. Diaoyu/Senkaku under the control of Okinawan/Ryukus people means there will be no more claim to those disputed islands by China, Taiwan or Japan.

China will not dare to attack Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands control by Okinawans. Neither will Taiwan dare to. The whole world, UN will condemn any nation that dare to bully a small recently born independent Ryukus Kingdom. Most likely China will just reluctantly make peace with the newly created Ryukukus State even though some think Diaoyu/Senkaku belongs to China.

As I have said, a neutral Ryukus Kingdom will ensure stability in the region, promote business with all neighbors, Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea etc.

Japan is like UK keeping Gibraltar from Spain. Spain is still contesting Gibraltar. Being nearer to Spain, naturally Gibraltar belongs to Spain, however British arrogance and military power allow her to keep Gibraltar all these years. In UK case, Spain is not strong, thus UK don't need to spend a huge sum of money to defend Gibraltar.

Not so with Japan's Ryukus Islands situation. China military increases in leaps and bounds and because of this Japan is forced to increase her military budget to counter China.

If Japan just allow Ryukus Islands to be independent, Japan can cut off the billions in additional military hardware purchase, again this means helping ordinary Japanese by not having to rise their sales tax!

So practically speaking Japan is better off to let go Ryukus Islands, good for their own wallet, good for world peace. Sometimes in order to save oneself, it is better to cut off the limb that is starting to poison the whole system. I hope Japanese can understand this analogy.

Japan also cannot count on US for support. Even though the US administration is bounded by law to defend Japan, the American public will make sure US don't support Japan beyond lip service especially if China only attack Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands.
